Boeing Combat Helicopter Deal Worth Billions

Aug. 14, 2024
Poland is acquiring 96 Apache helicopters in a multi-billion-dollar deal that includes an offset agreement to coordinate development of a local maintenance and support network, plus technology development.

Boeing Defense, Space, & Security will supply 96 AH-64E Apache combat helicopters to Poland as part of that nation’s Kruk Attack Helicopter program – an effort to update the rotorcraft element of its defense system. Polish defense officials confirmed their intention to acquire the helicopters by endorsing a Letter of Offer and Acceptance with the supplier, which follows a long process of selection, approval, and agreement by Poland and the U.S. government.

At a reported AH-64E unit cost of $52 million, the full order could be worth as much as $5 billion to Boeing, though some reports suggest it could be worth much more. It is the largest Foreign Military Sales order in the history of Boeing’s Vertical Lift division, according to the company, and makes Poland the largest Apache customer after of the U.S. Army.

The AH-64E is a twin-turboshaft attack helicopter with a tailwheel landing gear and a tandem cockpit for two crewmen. Nose-mounted sensors are in place to acquire targets and provide night vision. The aircraft is mounted with a 30-mm M230 chain gun and has launch capability for AGM-114 Hellfire missiles and Hydra 70 rockets.

According to Boeing, the AH-64E is the most modern configuration of its well-established Apache helicopter platform, combining “a battle-tested design with transformational technologies to deliver an unmatched mix of performance and versatility.”

“We are honored the Government of Poland has placed their confidence in us,” stated Vince Logsdon, v.p., International Business Development for Boeing Defense. “The AH-64E Apache helicopters will strengthen Poland’s operational capability and interoperability with the U.S., NATO and allied nations. We look forward to delivering this unmatched capability.”

Nearly a year ago the U.S. Dept. of State approved a Foreign Military Sale to furnish Poland’s armed forces, a supply first proposed almost two years ago.

The LOA that Poland has entered into with Boeing follows a recent “offset agreement” for maintenance and support of the Polish Armed Forces fleet of Apache helicopters by Polish defense contractors. That agreement will establish training programs and supporting the development of a composite laboratory in that country.

The purpose of these “offset” projects is to strengthen the Polish defense sector’s ability to sustain Apache helicopters while creating a skilled workforce and promoting technological advances, according to Boeing.
