$3B Plan to Expand Ford Pickup Production

July 19, 2024
A third production line for Super Duty trucks will be installed in Ontario for start-up in 2026, as the automaker continues to expand its portfolio options beyond EVs.

Ford Motor Co. will invest $2.3 billion to add a third production line for its Super Duty pickups, at the Oakville Assembly Complex in Ontario. The two lines where those vehicles are presently assembled – the Kentucky Truck Assembly Plant in Louisville and Ohio Assembly Plant in Sheffield – are operating at full capacity, the automaker stated.

The new investment may be seen as a further check on Ford’s long-term commitment to electrification: Oakville had been designated as a site for future expansion of EV production, but since earlier this year Ford has pivoted to developing a broader portfolio of future vehicle options.

The total new investment is closer $3 billion, Ford noted, with related investments that support Super Duty production at the Sharonville (Ohio) Transmission Plant; Rawsonville (Mich.) Components Plant; and Sterling (Mich.) Axle Plant.

F-Series Super Duty trucks are heavy-duty vehicles designed for towing and hauling and available in three models, the Ford F-250, Ford F-350, and Ford 450.

In total, 10 Ford powertrain, transmission, stamping, and final assembly operations are affected by the expansion in Super Duty production, according to Ford.

The new Ontario assembly line capable of producing 100,000 pickups per year is seen coming into operation in 2026, according to a Ford announcement. The expansion at Oakville will secure approximately 1,800 jobs according to Ford and result in about 150 new jobs at the Windsor (Ont.) Engine Complex, and roughly 70 new jobs and additional overtime at U.S. component plants.

“Super Duty is a vital tool for businesses and people around the world and, even with our Kentucky Truck Plant and Ohio Assembly Plant running flat out, we can’t meet the demand,” Ford CEO Jim Farley stated in a release. “This move benefits our customers and supercharges our Ford Pro commercial business.”
