Rolls-Royce Plc. has a new order to deliver a series of Trent 700 engines to power 15 Airbus A330 jets for China Eastern Airlines, a contract it reported is worth $1.5 billion.  The order also includes long-term maintenance and support services through Rolls-Royce’s TotalCare program.

Tang Bing, the Airline’s executive vice president, said, “This aircraft and engine combination continues to be key to our expansion and competitiveness. I look forward to the Trent 700 continuing to deliver outstanding performance and efficiency for our operations.”

The Trent 700 is a high-bypass turbofan engine, the first of its Trent series of engines and developed to support the A330 line of wide-body twin-engine passenger jets. It continues to be one of the main engine options on those aircraft.

According to the manufacturer, Trent 700 provides “best fuel burn, emissions, and noise performance” for the A330 series, and has won 70% of new orders over the last five years and a similar percentage on future A330 deliveries.

Rolls-Royce noted it has more than 1,600 installed engines on the A330s worldwide, and nearly 90% market share for jets serving China’s commercial aviation sector.

China Eastern Airlines serves domestic, regional, and international destinations from its Shanghai hubs, with 51 A330s in its fleet of nearly 450 aircraft.  The 15 A330s it has on order are in addition to 20 Airbus A350 XWB aircraft.

“China Eastern operates one of the world’s largest A330 fleets, and we are honored they have selected the Trent 700 again, as it continues to respond to Chinese demand with new levels of service,” offered Paul Freestone, Rolls-Royce senior vice president.
