General Motors indicated it would invest $119 million in new production equipment and other systems to update a precision machining plant in Wyoming, Mich. The automaker emphasized the improvements would result in approximately 300 “future jobs,” not specifying the timing or nature of those positions.
GM said its investment in the GM Components Holdings Grand Rapids Operation is part of a $5.4-billion investment program announced April 30 for various U.S. operations. The jobs involved in the Grand Rapids Operation project represent nearly half of the 650 jobs anticipated as a result of the investments, across the GM organization.
The Grand Rapids plant’s current employment total is approximately 500 over three shifts, producing parts like lash adjusters, roller hydraulic valve lifters, cylinder deactivation lifters, continuously variable cam phasers, used in Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac products. The plant also producers metal stampings.
The automaker noted that specific details of the Grand Rapids plant improvements would be delayed for later release.
“This investment in the future recognizes the excellent workforce at Grand Rapids Operations,” stated Scott Whybrew, North America manufacturing manager for GM. “It also demonstrates GM’s collaboration with our UAW partners to innovate and bring tangible benefits to our customers.”
