Pratt & Whitney delivered its first PurePower PW1200G engine to Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation, which selected the PW1000G geared turbofan engine family to power its new aircraft series, the Mitsubishi Regional Jet. The new planes will make their commercial debut in 2017.

The joint venture of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Toyota Motor Corporation will produce the MRJ at a specially developed plant at Nagoya, Japan. It will be the first aircraft designed and manufactured in Japan since the mid 1970s.

In addition to its fan-drive gear the PW1200G has advanced 3D aerodynamics, lightweight materials including a composite fan case, and advanced designs for the compressor, combustor, and turbine; and advanced controls and engine health-monitoring sensors, to enhance performance and fuel efficiency.

"Pratt & Whitney looks forward to powering Mitsubishi's new, next-generation aircraft with PurePower Geared Turbofan engines. Our new engine architecture complements the various MRJ technologies that will offer customers a reduction in fuel consumption, noise and emissions," stated David Brantner, president, Pratt & Whitney Commercial Engines.

The PW1000G engines are manufactured at Pratt & Whitney’s plant in Middletown, Conn.

"We are very pleased to be a part of this exciting partnership with Mitsubishi, and we look forward to supporting the aircraft's flight test," Brantner added.

The PW1000G family also is due to be the exclusive engine for the Bombardier CSeries and Embraer's new E-Jets, and as an option on Russia’s United Aircraft Corp.’s Irkut MS-21 and Airbus A320neo.
