General Dynamics’ Electric Boat business unit was awarded a $121.8-million contract to fund long-lead time procurement in the construction of three Virginia-class nuclear submarines.

Electric Boat is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics, and one of two major contractors manufacturing the attack submarines.

The initial construction contract for the three vessels — SSN-793, SSN-794 and SSN-795 — was issued in April 2012. This modification puts the contract value at $716.5 million, according to General Dynamics.

The builder did not indicate the construction timeframe.

The Virginia-class submarines are designed for a wide range of open-ocean and littoral com at missions. Electric Boat builds the subs at its shipyard in Groton, Conn.

The new contract specifically funds steam and electrical-plant components, main propulsion units, and ship-service turbine generator sets. It also will cover miscellaneous hull systems and mechanical and electrical-systems components for submarine construction.
