Air France-KLM Orders 100 New Airbus Jets

Dec. 16, 2021
An order estimated at up to $10 billion also includes options for dozens more of the Airbus narrow-body aircraft, as well as multiple A350 freighter jets.

Air France-KLM placed an order for 100 Airbus A320neo family aircraft, with options for 60 more of those narrow-body jets, which would be in service for the KLM and Transavia airlines. Reportedly, Air France-KLM also agreed to purchase four freighter versions of the larger A350 aircraft, plus options for four more.

The total order, which could be worth more than $10 billion at list prices, has not been confirmed by Airbus.

The aircraft holding company said the new aircraft would "improve its economic and environmental performance through the introduction of next generation aircraft".

"These evolutionary orders will position our group airlines on the path to improved performance while accelerating our decarbonization trajectory," according to a statement by Air France-KLM CEO Benjamin Smith.

The Airbus A320neo is the updated series of the A320 family of mid-range commercial jets introduced in 2010 with a choice of the CFM LEAP-1A or Pratt & Whitney PW1000G geared-turbofan engine, and large winglets and other aerodynamic revisions, plus various material changes to reduce the aircraft weight, all introduced to improve fuel efficiency.

Airbus recently reported it has drawn new orders for more than 7,550 A320neo-family aircraft since the introduction.

The A350 is the “extra wide-body” aircraft Airbus introduced in 2013, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB turbofan engines.
