The U.S. Dept. of Defense’ Missile Defense Agency place a $254.7-million contract with Lockheed Martin Space to provide maintenance and sustainment service for two Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) batteries. This fixed-price contract that runs through January 2026 was placed under the “foreign military sales” authority and concerns two THAAD batteries in the United Arab Emirates.
THAAD is an anti-ballistic missile defense system designed to destroy short-, medium-, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles by intercepting them during descent or re-entry. Lockheed has manufactured numerous THAAD systems since 2008 for deployment on U.S. territory and in other strategic locations.
Only one offer for the contract was solicited and one bid was made, according to DoD.
Lockheed Martin Space will perform the contract work in Sunnyvale, Calif., Grande Prairie, Tex., Camden, Ark., and Anniston, Huntsville, and Troy, Ala.
The MDA is the U.S. Dept. of Defense’s agency responsible for developing layered defense against ballistic missiles.
