Several aerospace engine component manufacturers who expressed a need for a higher-speed and more accurate laser drilling machine than was currently available strongly influenced the development of Mitsui Seiki’s (www.mitsuiseiki.com) VLD-300 vertical Nd:YAG laser drilling machine. The machine, which handles 12-in. cube parts, delivers positioning accuracy and repeatability in X, Y, Z axes of 0.00004 in., positioning accuracy of +/- 6 arc seconds and repeatability of +/- 3 arc seconds in the A axis, and positioning accuracy of +/- 4 arc seconds and repeatability of +/- 2 arc seconds in the C axis. For different aerospace and other industry applications, the VLD-300 works with CO2, diode pump, and fiber lasers.
