New Sinker EDM Technique Speeds Roughing of Deep Ribs

A combination of shortened jump cycles and spark-gap adaptive power control improve process efficiency and productivity

The latest iteration of Makino’s SuperSpark technology has adaptive jump functions and automatic calculation, and adjusts machine power according to depth and draft.

CNC machine developer Makino is releasing an advanced version of its SuperSpark ™ sinker EDM technology, which it indicated will reduce roughing time for deep-rib applications by up to 30%.

Makino introduced its SuperSpark technology in 2001, and subsequent versions have advanced the technology as an aid not only to roughing operations but also to finishing, particularly with tapered electrodes. The developer explained that SuperSpark uses a combination of shortened jump cycles and spark-gap adaptive power control to improve process efficiency and productivity. Under standard sinker EDM jump cycles, the developer noted, more than 60% of total process time is spent out of the cut. “SuperSpark more than doubles the actual cutting time because its shortened jump height requires less time for electrodes to return to the workpiece,” Makino stated.

In addition, the spark-gap adaptive power control allows electrodes to discharge sparks during the jump cycle for continuous cutting throughout the EDM process. As the electrode depth increases, the power and spark gap decreases to prevent overburn. Together, these technologies reduce total machining times by 20-30% over standard sinker EDM technologies, Makino said.

It continued that SuperSpark IV builds on these features to achieve higher efficiency in deep ribs and drafted electrodes. With its adaptive jump functions and automatic calculation, and adjustment of machine power according to depth and draft, SuperSpark IV significantly improves deep-rib machining efficiency over its predecessor.

SuperSpark IV is offered on all Makino sinker EDMs with MGH6 generator/control or later.
