Providing 43 X 22 X 22-in. travels (X/Y/Z), the A-3 VMC handles large workpieces as well as multiple workholders containing small parts. Its 12,000-rpm CT-40-taper spindle uses P4 angular-contact bearings and a floating drawbar that reduces bearing pressure during tool clamping/unclamping.
Rapids are 1,417 ipm, and multiple nozzles around the spindle flood workpieces and tools with coolant. Coolant also comes through the spindle at 350 psi. An external through-the-spindle coolantfiltration unit handles particles down to 25 µ while a secondary element filters to 10 µ. The A-3 has a cam-type, double-arm, 24-tool automatic toolchanger.
