Defense contractor Raytheon Co. announced a $39.6-million contract modification for the AIM-9X Block II infrared missile, from the U.S. Dept. of Defense. It’s an update to a missile-manufacturing program that’s been in production by Raytheon since 2003. The company indicated it has produced over 4,500 AIM-9X Block I and II Sidewinder missiles in that time.
The AIM-9X Sidewinder is an infrared-guided air-to-air missile used in surface-to-air and air-to-surface missions. It’s a weapon system used on the F/A-18 Hornet, F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jets.
