Marposs Corp., a supplier of precision metrology equipment, said that its parent firm, Marposs S.p.A., of Bologna, Italy, has acquired control of ARTIS Gesellschaft fr angewandte Messtechnik GmbH, a developer, manufacturer and supplier of process monitoring products, located in Bispingen near Hamburg, Germany.

The company’s North American operation, ARTIS Systems Inc., is located in Livonia, Michigan.

Established in 1983, ARTIS makes a range of in-process tool, process and machine condition monitoring systems and adaptive control apparatus mainly for metal-cutting applications. Its market-leading products are primarily used by manufacturers of machine tools in aerospace, automotive, heavy equipment and other capital goods industries world-wide..

ARTIS products are designed to help its customers to increase productivity and decrease total life cycle costs of machine tools, resulting in a positive impact on quality. ARTIS sells in approximately 25 countries, and has an installed base of approximately 15,000 systems.

Hans-Georg Conrady, Managing Director of ARTIS, said that working with Marposs represents the opportunity for ARTIS’ to roll out products on a broader geographic scale through Marposs’ global distribution network.

Additionally, Conrady said he envisions the development of new products from the combination of Marposs and ARTIS technology and products.

Stefano Possati, president of Marposs S.p.A., said his company’s goal is to grow in its traditional and in new markets.

“ARTIS offers cutting-edge solutions with large potential to be used in additional applications and by current and future Marposs customers on a global basis.” Mr. Possati added.

“Our goal is to grow in a solid and continued way both in our traditional and new markets. Purchasing quality companies with products that are complementary to those of Marposs is a tool that we will continue using, in addition to our strong activity in research and development inside the company," Possati said in a prepared statement.

Marposs was established in 1952, and provides a wide range of technologies including electronic, non-destructive (ND), optical and pneumatic, for measurement and process control of manufactured components to the metalworking, aerospace, glass and IT industries. Marposs employs approximately 2,200 people at 80 locations in 22 countries world-wide. The company’s U.S. headquarters are in Auburn Hills, Mich.
