More than half of the persons who responded to a short, unscientific poll on the AMERICAN MACHINIST web site say that Ford Motor Co.'s announced plans to close as many as 14 of its production facilities as it lays off 30,000 workers would not affect their business at all.

However, six percent of the respondents said the closings would be a "huge disaster" for their business.

Besides 55 percent who said the closings would not affect business, 18 percent said the closings would have very little impact on their business and 21 percent said they have had worse news for their operations, yet weathered those storms.

Ford announced Jan. 23 that it would shutter as many as 14 plants and cut as many as 30,000 blue-collar jobs in a multi-year restructuring program designed to make the company more profitable.
