The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration has proposed penalties totaling $74,000 against a Huntsville, Ala., company for safety violations stemming from a worker's fatal exposure to hydrogen sulfite in December.

ATI Engineered Products was cited for 13 serious violations and one repeat violation in the incident. Serious violations include failure to install hydrogen sulfite monitors and a lack of training for workers handling hazardous chemicals.

"This employer has been fined by OSHA in the past for numerous violations...but continues to place his employees in danger," said Roberto Sanchez, the agency's Birmingham director, in a statement.
