Processing Long Workpieces in Single Set-ups

Multi-tasking VMC offers multiple-surface, simultaneous 5-axis capabilities
Mazak’s Variaxis i-700 is a vertical machine that processes long workpieces efficiently, along with jobs that demand precision-machining on complex profiled surfaces. Mazak Corp. indicated that its new Variaxis i-700 multi-tasking machine is a simultaneous five-axis vertical machining center that can process long workpieces in a single set-up, with efficiency, and also handles precision-machining of complex profiled surfaces. It’s designed with a generous Y-axis travel of 43.30 in. (1,100 mm) and X-axis of 23.62 in.(600 mm), so it accommodates workpieces measuring up to 33.46 in.(850 mm) in diameter and 19.68 in.(500 mm) high. Its roller gear cam-driven rotary/tilt table, with 360° of rotation in the C axis and +30° through -120° of tilt in the A axis, is supported at each end and machines with accuracy and stability. An 18,000 rpm, 30-hp 40-taper spindle on the VMC has a compact nose design that helps increase the machine’s Z-axis stroke to 23.62 in.(600 mm), and overall machining stability by allowing for the use of shorter tools. A 30-tool automatic tool changer adds part processing flexibility and contributes to continuous non-interrupted machining operations.

Speed and productivity are achieved thanks the Variaxis i-700’s rapid traverse rates, as well as its use of Mazak’s MX Hybrid roller guide system in the X-, Y- and Z-axes. The machine processes at rates up to 2,362 ipm (60 m/min) in the X- and Y-axes, and 2,205 ipm (56 m/min) in the Z-axis.

The MX Hybrid roller guide system ensures durability and reliability that result in long-term accuracy, according to Mazak. The system increases vibration dampening to extend tool life, handles higher load capacities, accelerates and decelerates quicker to shorten cycle times, consumes less oil for “greener” operations, and lasts longer with less required maintenance, the machine builder said.
