Orion Energy Systems wants American manufacturers to replace their legacy electric lighting, known as High Intensity Discharge (HID), with Orion's Illuminator Series lighting. According to the company, HID lighting devours energy and money, while Orion lighting uses half the energy and increases illumination output 50%.

One shop benefiting from Illuminator lighting is Charter Steel in Saukville, Wis. Since making the switch, Charter has saved $101,415/yr.

"We believe Orion's lighting is a great addition to our plant and helps continue the company's commitment to environmentally sound policies," comments Ken Hoopman of Charter Steel. Over last year, Orion saved its customers over 50 mW and 300-million kW hr — approximately $16.5 million in annual savings.

The Illuminator Series uses individual reflectors for each bulb and several other innovations. It has a sustainable life of 20 yr, which translates into an energy savings of 6 billion kW hr or around $330 million (based on a company's current installations).
