Simplifying Programming for Turbine Components

Mastercam Blade Expert to be unveiled at EMO 2011
Mastercam’s Blade Expert is a toolpath engine specifically for multi-bladed parts, including fans, propellers, impellers, turbines, and marine screws.

At EMO Hannover 2011 this month, CNC Software is introducing a simplified toolpath engine for bladed parts, an add-on module for its Windows-based CAD/CAM software. MasterCAM is a family of CAM programs for 2- through 5-axis routing, milling and turning, 2- and 4-axis wire EDM, 2D and 3D design, surface and solid modeling, and artistic relief cutting. The latest version is Mastercam X5, which also will be demonstrated at EMO.

The new Mastercam Blade Expert is described as a simplified approach to toolpath creation process for any multi-bladed parts, including fans, propellers, impellers, turbines, and marine screws. “There is no limit to the number of blades, splitters, or sub-splitters that can be programmed,” according to the CAM developer.

Such parts are increasingly in demand for turbine machinery used in industries like power generation, transfer, and propulsion. “Blade Expert eliminates guess work, gives you smooth toolpaths, and a dramatic reduction in programming time,” CNC Software indicated.

Blade Expert presents programmers with a range of effective, flexible multiaxis roughing strategies. All of the toolpaths it develops are trimmed to stock in process, for maximum efficiency, and the programmer/operator has precision control over the cut patterns for blades, fillets, and floor finishing. Automatic tool axis control ensures smooth machine motion, and control is focused for all “air moves,” transitions, extensions, and linking. Automatic collision avoidance between the part, fixture, and all tool components is provided, too.

Full machine simulation is available to assist the programmer and make maximum effectiveness of the machine’s capabilities.

“Blade Expert has a clear, precise user interface which follows the consistent flow of all existing Mastercam 5-axis toolpaths,” stated Gary Hargreaves, CNC Software’s vice president, Business Development. “This new tool in our toolbox has been fully tested and it is backed by 28 years of industry experience. When you join the Mastercam family, you not only get superior tools, but you also gain a partner in manufacturing solutions so you can cut any part with precision and confidence.”
