8,000-HP VFD Introduced

May 3, 2010
WEG claims new drive delivers 99% efficiency, extended reliability

The new MVW-01 VFD introduced last month delivers 8,000 HP. WEG Electric says the new drive offers 99% efficiency and extended reliability.

WEG Electric Corp., which supplies motors, drives, controls, transformers, and generators, recently released a new 8,000-HP MVW-01 medium-voltage variable frequency drive. The fist units were shipped last month.

According to the supplier, the 8,000 horsepower VFD is the largest it has ever manufactured, and the expansion in capability doubles the horsepower available from its MVW-01 drive. The MVW-01 features 99% efficiency and a 22-year mean time between failure (MTBF), the highest available in the market.

Of its particular attributes, WEG indicates the new drive has a 4,160 V rating; current of 1,086 A ND, 95 A HD; and frequency of 0-100 Hz.

“It is important to note that the 99% efficiency is an average of 1% more than other medium voltage VFDs on the market, which can mean a savings of up to 50 thousand dollars per year, depending on the application,” states WEG Electric product manager Charles Schuh.

The MVW-01 is targeted for high-demand applications, such as mining, cement, shipping, iron metallurgy, and petro-chemical. Technologically advanced components, such as HV-IGBTs, are incorporated into the product to offer maximum reliability.

WEG Electric Corp. is the largest industrial electric motor manufacturer in the Americas and one of the world’s largest manufacturers of electric motors, too, producing more than 10 million units annually.
